To improve employability skills, the government has introduced the teaching of foreign languages ​​such as German to final-year students of public engineering schools, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy told the Assembly of Tamil Nadu. The Minister said that the government has introduced Civil Engineering degree and Mechanical Engineering degree in Tamil background at Central Polytechnic College, Chennai and Government Polytechnic Colleges Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Nagercoil from 2022-23. “Thus, the students will be able to better understand the concepts and applications in Tamil,” he said.

This would also help students to avail the benefits of booking under the People Student of Tamil Language (PSTM) category for state government jobs. “In order to improve employability skills and overseas career opportunities, the government has introduced the teaching of foreign languages ​​such as German, Japanese, French and Chinese to final-year students. government engineering colleges in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation,” Mr. Ponmudy said in his department’s policy brief (2022-23). The minister said the government had announced that 100 textbooks would be translated into Tamil, in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC) to help students study in Tamil.

TNTESC identified the translators and also distributed the translation work, by subject. The translation of textbooks is currently underway and it is proposed to complete the translation of 50 textbooks by June 2022, the minister said. Special efforts are made to help students studying in public art and science schools find employment after graduation. In order to facilitate more job opportunities for the student community, the placement cells in the colleges have been reorganized and enthusiastic teachers are placed as placement officers in the placement cells.
