Final-year engineering students in Tamil Nadu will learn foreign languages to enhance their research and job opportunities abroad, the state’s Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi said on Thursday.
German, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and French will be taught to final-year students in government and aided engineering schools starting this year, he said.
Closing the debate on the request for grants for his department in the Assembly, the minister said that degree courses in the Tamil language will be introduced in the next academic year in the civil and mechanical engineering streams and that the courses will be gradually extended to other subjects.
Short-term, female-friendly diploma and certificate courses in interior design, office management and computer applications, web design, CAD, biomedical electronics and ECG will be launched in order to increase the enrollment of women and expand their employment opportunities, he said. .
Measures will be taken to allow lateral entry into B.Com (2nd year) for students who have completed the Diploma in Business Practice and the Diploma in Business Practice and IT, the Minister announced.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said juvenile writers under the age of 18 will receive the Kavimani Prize to encourage their talent. Three top writers will be selected for a prize which carries a scholarship of Rs 25,000, a medal and a certificate, he said.
