Duolingo brings the fun of learning a new language to the Philippines with the launch of the English course for Tagalog speakers.
Targeting a wider audience, Duolingo encourages Filipinos to try the app through an activity that appeals to their highly competitive and fun nature: karaoke!
Duolingo is launching Duolingo Duet – a public challenge to translate and sing nothing less than the iconic song “Äwitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko” into English on TikTok. Duolingo recognizes that even though Filipinos are already fluent in English, there are still those who barely have access to language learning.
Local celebrities and social media influencers have joined the activity, such as Kristel Fulgar and Elha Nympha to name a few, who are both Duolingo users. According to Kristel, the app has helped her improve her English and Korean skills.
The Duolingo app is free. At the heart of its mission is to provide the best education in the world and to make it accessible to all. Duolingo is used by people from all economic backgrounds, from Bill Gates to journalists, celebrities, and even those who are politically displaced.
Duolingo Duet reflects the brand’s fun and quirky tone. Duolingo is known for helping learners learn a language through gamification – the app keeps users engaged as they learn, as they participate in leaderboards, maintain streaks, earn points, level up, and even get virtual currency.
Duolingo’s lessons are built with engaging visuals, habit-building reminders, and “small size” packaged lessons, meaning you can take lessons on the go in as little as 5 minutes at a time.
According to Duolingo Marketing Director Haina Xiang, “The Philippines shows a strong interest in language learning.” In 2021 alone, Philippines Monthly Active Users (MAUs) grew by 32% YoY, which is higher than Duolingo’s overall global MAU growth of 10% in 1 year. Interestingly, the peak time of Filipinos on the app is 9-10pm, with an average usage time of 15 minutes per day.
Xiang added that “in addition to English and popular languages like Japanese and Korean, thousands of Filipinos are also learning man-made languages like Klingon and High Valyrian.”
Duolingo offers over 100 courses in 41 different languages. Each connects its more than 500 million users to the people and culture that matter to them individually.
“The Philippines is one of the most linguistically diverse nations in the world. The appetite to learn grows. Duolingo wants to share the fun by making free language learning more accessible to Filipinos,” concludes Xiang.
