More students will be added to the FVTC English Learning Course

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – World Relief Fox Valley and Fox Valley Technical College have partnered to help refugees, who have resettled in the Fox Cities, learn to improve their English skills through the Learn English (ELL) course.

Mohammad Azimy, a refugee from Afghanistan, is enrolled in ELL. He has been in the United States for about five months. Azimy says he was a dentist back home and hopes to continue his career here, but there have been some challenges.

“Now I have applied to different dental clinics and programs, but no one is responding to me,” Azimy explained.

He has completed six years of medical school and has his certifications with a degree, but they are not accepted here. “That’s another issue, you have to take an IMBD exam, which tests you from the first and second year of your training,” he said. It has been eight years since Azimy graduated from school, but he says he is determined to achieve his goals here.

“His English is pretty good already,” said ELL instructor Gillian Giles-Skelton. Giles-Skelton says Azimy is an excellent student, who is outgoing. “In this class we have so many different countries and the students love it. Mohammad is so easy to talk to so they share and have fun,” she added.

With the ongoing war in Ukraine, the FVTC is preparing to welcome other refugees, who may settle in the region. No official word on that yet, but they’ll be ready. Open enrollment is underway this semester, with approximately 90 students already in class.
