The 3 best games to play when learning foreign languages

We all know that studying isn’t the most fun activity in the world. That’s why games can be a great tool for practicing a foreign language, especially when you’re just starting out. They’re engaging and help you focus on what you need to learn to win the game. And remember: if all else fails (or even if they don’t!), try to chat with tutors the one where we ask what color shoes each person is wearing today. This will almost always work!

The following three games will help you memorize vocabulary and improve your pronunciation at the same time:

Memory is a classic board game that can help you memorize words in a foreign language. The game is played with a deck of cards featuring a word in the target language. You must match the word on your card to the word on the corresponding space on the board. If you are playing alone, it can also be useful to have access to a dictionary.

To play Memory/Match:

  • Choose your level (beginner, intermediate or advanced), then place all the cards face down on your table for everyone to see;
  • Mix them carefully;
  • Turn over two cards at a time so that they only show their back side;
  • Each player chooses to match them or not;
  • Repeat this process until all 24 cards are turned face up. You can only continue if there are still matches available!

“Who am I?”

This game is a great way to test your knowledge of a foreign language and also a great way to learn new vocabulary. Draw cards, play the game from a deck containing photos of famous people. Players must guess the name of each person shown on a card before moving on to the next. If you succeed, you keep that card; otherwise, you must discard it and draw again until you can correctly identify someone on your next turn!

For instance:

> Would I recognize him? No answer given

> Is she famous in our country? Yes (correct) – You keep this card in front of you

> But what role does it play? No answer given

“Guess who?”

Guessing games are a great way to learn the culture of a language. In this game you may have to guess what kind of job you have or what you like to do in your free time. It’s a great way to practice using different tenses and to learn how people describe themselves when talking about their lives.

You can play this game with any number of people, but it’s best if you play with friends or family members who know each other well enough for their details to be revealed through conversation. If you’re playing alone, try recording yourself saying each answer before guessing so everyone knows how many times they got it wrong!

Passively as we could do in class!
